A brief history
Sensei John Burnett has been the Clubs Chief Instructor for the life of the club up to the present day.
Sensei John’s first experience with Martial arts was in 1974-75 in the back yard of an instructor known as Sensei Boy, then in 1976-77 he began training with Sensei John Chaplin and Sensei Bob Allen in Perth. Phil and Ian Pottinger, the original instructors, took all gradings at the time.
Then in 1981 both Sensei Bob Alan and Sensei John Chaplin joined the South West Goju Ryu under then chief Instructor Alan Burdett. Sensei John Burnett was graded to 3rd Kyu in December 1981 by Shihan Alan Burdett and has been with Shihan’s South West Gojo Karate Association ever since and after many years of training and coaching his students has attained the rank of 4th Dan.
Some of Sensei Johns’ highlights over the last few years have been:
Being awarded Life Membership of the South West GoJu Karate Association;
Training with Hanshi Tino Ceberano in Manjimup with his high grade students;
Having students participate in the South West Games;
Teaching Karate to country schools as part of the “Active after School” program, run by the Australian Sports Commission;
Seeing his Wife , Dianne, achieve her Black belt;
Assisting his students achieve their goals and having a successful dojo;
Being awarded 4th Dan grade by Alan Burdett 8th Dan;
Being awarded a Certificate of recognition for 25 Years of Coaching by Chief Instructor Alan Burdett;
